I have recently started running, actually, I have recently started running again. Running is one of those activities that I do not enjoy. But I make a point to do it because I work in an office and spend most of my day sitting.
Now, I wish I was in a cool dance class or had access to a lap pool, but I do not. And the great thing about running is you can run almost anywhere, so it is convenient. Off and on in life I have been a “runner”, but lately, and for longer than I would like to admit, I have been off any form of exercise at all. So three weeks ago I decided to start running, with a very modest ramp up, but I quit after a week.
How Can You Battle Discouragement?
I was a little discouraged. But I came up with a new plan: “small steps”. So instead of running at a pace that is-at this point-just too much for me, I am going to take it one baby step at time. It is a philosophy that I have used many times in my life for many goals I wanted to accomplish.
Every big goal seems insurmountable at the beginning-but tell yourself- small steps. Today I ran a mile-very slowly with very small steps. But I finished and I am not afraid to try again tomorrow. My goal is to run a mile every day this month.
Just a Little Bit
Most things that are worth doing require you to persevere, and to sacrifice. Not every goal has to be accomplished all at once and many times it cannot be. So when I want to stop running, I tell myself: “just a little bit”, it all adds up after all.
