One way to save is by shopping at discount stores or bulk stores. For example, Mike’s Discount Foods typically has food at very discounted prices. Otherwise, shopping at Aldi’s typically will save some money, or buying in bulk at Costco or Sam’s Club. Dollar stores typically have a wide variety of groceries, as well. You could also use coupons if you cannot make it to a discount or bulk store.

Another idea to save on your grocery bill is meal prepping. For instance, instead of buying items for different lunches every day, meal prep one big meal you can split up into smaller meals for lunches. You can also make larger meals and then eat leftovers. You could start implementing a smorgasbord food night, cleaning the fridge or cabinets and making various foods. This should save you at the grocery store, as you go through your food before buying more.

If you have a large family or big friend groups, you could start having potlucks or large gatherings for meals where everyone chips in. Then, instead of the burden of groceries being on just your family, everyone going would share the costs.

Finally, conscious grocery shopping can help save money. Use a grocery shopping list so you do not buy more than you need, and keep track to make sure you are not buying things you already have at home.

These are just a few ideas to save on your grocery budget, before, during, or after bankruptcy. When you go through bankruptcy, your attorney will help you create an expense budget. One of the things you and your attorney will discuss is monthly spending on groceries and household items.
