IS EVERY CREDITOR LEGITIMATE

shutterstock_1390162646Occasionally debtors will find themselves in a situation where they are continuously being hounded by creditors. The debts have been sold and resold and many times debtors are not even sure who they owe funds to anymore. Unfortunately, this can make those debtors vulnerable to scams. If a debtor receives a call from an aggressive creditor demanding payment and the creditor is offering a substantial discount the debtor may be tempted to take the deal-even though the debtor does not know the exact source of the debt.

This type of scam is prevalent, and occasionally debtors do make deals and pay sham debt. And once the funds are gone, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done, barring calling the proper authorities and allowing them to investigate. It can be difficult to stop these harassing calls because the caller is not calling from any reputable business or collection agency but is instead calling from a criminal enterprise.

It can be difficult to decipher which creditors are legitimate especially if the debtor’s debts have been sold and resold. Or if the caller is professing to be one of the debtor’s legitimate creditors and threatening legal action. What debtors should always keep in mind is that many people have access to their credit reports and their contact information. Debtors should always have a healthy amount of skepticism when dealing with someone who has called them and is demanding money.

As a debtor, if you are interested in speaking with the creditor, the best policy is to offer to call the creditor back and then use other resources to verify the correct contact information for the creditor. And always do your research about the creditor, often times there will be online accounts of any known scams.

Legitimate creditors will and do call debtors. But debtors should be very wary of these calls and investigate further before providing any funds to the creditor. This is especially true if the creditor is being overly aggressive, hostile, or using abusive language.   Contact the attorneys at LifeBackLaw and see us at www.LifeBackLaw.com and let us help you get your life back.
