In 2021, LifeBack Law Firm decided to change who we were to Minnesotans needing a safe refuge to inquire about bankruptcy and a safe place for employees to work. Looking back at early 2021, even I had little understanding (I am sad to say) just how unsafe the firm was for employees and prospective clients. When we set out to revamp ourselves and promote diversity and inclusion amongst our ranks, the blowback we got was swift, immature, and as insecure as you would imagine. It turns out, for many, unless diversity benefits them, they give diversity lip service. The trouble for them is the firm had no intentions of giving diversity and inclusion lip service.
I am proud to say in 2023, LifeBack Law Firm is the most diverse and the most inclusive we have ever been in our firm’s history. Recently, we lost our firm’s founding partner. Roger Putnam Schmidt founded the firm in 1972. We are grateful to Roger for starting the firm and carrying us until 2000. Unfortunately, when Roger was still alive he witnessed another lawyer file a motion to try to dissolve the firm he started. Thankfully, the court denied the motion and his firm survived.
The firm is still battling those who would like to see it destroyed. I am always amazed at people and businesses who try to do exceptional things like be kind and helpful to one another and those people who try to attack these people and businesses whose sole focus is on being kind and helpful. Who would attack another person or business for being kind and helpful? You would be surprised.
However, the firm and its employees, strengthened by diversity and inclusion, are a tough foe to beat. Indeed, it cannot be beat. The tie that binds this firm is our common understanding that our collective goal while walking these footsteps on this planet is to help and protect the marginalized.
