What It Feels like To File Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Before And AFter

How do people in Minnesota feel before they file a bankruptcy? If you are contemplating filing a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in Minnesota, chances are you feel like a real pile of dog doo doo right now. The good news is how you feel before you file bankruptcy is not the same as how you will feel after you file bankruptcy.

HOW YOU FEEL BEFORE YOU FILE BANKRUPTCY

First of all, I want to be very clear with my readers, I do not want to suggest I know exactly how you feel, because the truth is I don’t. However, Kain & Scott has been doing bankruptcy work since 1972. We have witnessed a thing or two about our guests over the years.

Our clients, over the years, have opened up to us and shared their fears with us. When Minnesotans face overwhelming debt, they often feel-

ANXIETY AND DISCOURAGED

Since I am high anxiety myself, I can relate to both of these feelings. As humans we always want to feel like we are in control and we can protect the roof over our heads, buy groceries, and yes, pay our bills. However, when overwhelming debt strikes you, it is like setting off a nuclear bomb in your life. The feeling like you are losing control is heartbreaking and devastating.

We all want to pay our bills and that leads to this feeling of total discouragement at not being able to do so. We humans don’t like to admit that sometimes it is ok to be weak, it’s ok to ask for help, it’s ok to be human. Sometimes, when we allow ourselves to open up and be more vulnerable, and ask for help, the other side is so beautiful!

If you too are feeling anxious and discouraged, you are a normal human being.

EMBARRASSED AND ASHAMED

When you lose control over your finances, many of our clients feel embarrassed and ashamed. Some how we relate paying our bills on time to self-worth. We should not do this to ourselves. We have never had anyone file a bankruptcy who just got back from Europe with their 10 friends using their plastic knowing they were going to file a bankruptcy.

The reality is Minnesotans file bankruptcy because of 1) business failure; 2) income drop; 3) divorce, 4) medical problems, and 5) bad financial decisions- big deal- we all make them. All of the reasons are triggers that could send any one of us into bankruptcy- trust me- we have seen it time and time again.

TIME STANDS STILL AND NO ONE CARES

Have you ever felt like no one understands or cares? Like time stands still and you can’t move forward until you fix this problem? So many of our clients said they could not sleep at night, they suffered from ulcers, and they just felt like they were frozen in time and could not move beyond this financial nightmare.

The problem is debt keeps us in the past. You always think if we didn’t do this or if I didn’t do that, I would not have incurred this or that. I am not a big believer in living in the past. Make sure when you reach out for help the law firm you hire truly cares.

HOW YOU FEEL AFTER YOU FILE BANKRUPTCY

I find it very interesting that of all the people we have helped over the years, I have never had a single client regret filing bankruptcy. However, our guests do have one regret. The one regret they all have is waiting too long to file the bankruptcy and get on with their lives.

Once you get over this hump and get on the other side of this, you get your life back! That’s right, you stop living in the past and you can actually move forward.

CONTROL AND COURAGE

Once you file the bankruptcy and get your discharge, you feel in control and courageous! That is right, you feel courageous. Sometimes in life you have to be vulnerable and willing to ask for help. If you are willing to go on a different adventure, the other side of this is so beautiful and renewing!

We honor the courage anxiety our clients feel when they contact us. We take our guests under our wings and help them get their lives back.

CONFIDENT AND CALM

When our guests have good information, and make a decision to protect their families first, their confidence level rises dramatically and there is a serenity that overcomes our clients. When you protect your family you are providing security to your family and protecting the roof over your head.

There is a quiet confidence our guests get when they resolve themselves to solving a debt problem that has plagued them for years. When our guests have the courage to take this step, they should find a law firm who honors that courage.

CARING

I know this seems like a strange thing to feel after you file bankruptcy and get your life back but it happens to most all of our clients. Life is so amazingly humbling and when you reach down into your soul and make a change in your life like this you suddenly become more aware to other’s suffering. The most common characteristic of us humans is we are all flawed and broken. That is what gives us our common humanity.

When you go through suffering like this, it causes you to be a more caring person for the suffering others go through as well. Why is that not a wonderful thing!?

On behalf of the clients who have had the courage to get their lives back already, we thank you. On behalf of those of you reading this and still suffering needlessly, we thank you and honor your courage and anxiety.
