Dresscode: What to wear to your 341 Bankruptcy Hearing

Written by Wesley Scott | October 12, 2025 at 10:29 AM

One of the most less-common questions people ask before their 341 Hearing is, what should I wear? For many, court appearances are not a daily occurrence, so it is completely normal question to have while preparing for the next step in your case.

The good news is there is no need for whole new fancy outfit! You are not expected to appear in an expensive suit or evening dress. This is not a trial or an episode of courtroom TV show; it’s more like a formal meeting with your bankruptcy trustee. However, it is still important to look respectful and presentable.

Here are a few simple guidelines:

  • Think business casual. A nice shirt, blouse, or sweater with slacks, khakis, or a skirt works well.
  • Steer clear of anything too casual. Skip ripped jeans, shorts, flip-flops, or items with offensive logos or slogans.
  • Be comfortable but neat. The meeting does not last long, so just choose something tidy and respectful that makes you feel confident.
  • No need for over-dressing. You don’t have to wear a suit or tie (unless that’s your normal style – then go for it!) The trustee just wants you to take the process seriously, but it doesn’t take coat-tails or pearls to have a successful meeting.

Keep in mind that the focus of your 341 hearing is on your honesty and cooperation, not your fashion. Dressing neatly and appropriately helps to set the right tone, but the most important thing is to show up prepared, be honest and follow the instructions of your attorney.
