Everyone that files bankruptcy is required to take a court mandated credit counseling course prior to filing. This can be done either online or by telephone, and usually takes between 30-60 minutes to complete. At Kain and Scott, P.A., we would provide you the website or phone number to use, and the fee for such a course as part of our services.
Taking a Credit Counseling Course Before Filing Bankruptcy in MN
The credit counseling course you take prior to filing bankruptcy in MN gives you an idea of your budget and recommends whether to file bankruptcy or not. Usually, you have already spoken to a bankruptcy attorney by the time you are told to complete the course, so usually you already know the recommendation is to file a bankruptcy.
Even if you have a good solid budget you stick to, and you know you have to file a bankruptcy because you spoke with an attorney, you still have to complete the course. At the end of the course you get a certificate of completion and that is a required document that gets filed with your bankruptcy paperwork at the time your bankruptcy case is filed.
Minnesota Financial Management Course for Bankruptcy
After your case is filed, there is one more course to complete, this course must be completed in order to get a discharge. This is called a Financial Management course. This course is also completed online or by telephone. The course is a 2-hour course that is timed, so it does take the full 2 hours to complete. This course is designed to provide you with knowledge on financial terminology and tools. It offers tips on budgeting and what is needed to get your finances back on track post-bankruptcy.
